How to Stay Cool (With or Without AC)

As summer brings dramatic weather changes and heat reaches its peaks, it’s easy for us to feel mentally, physically and energetically off balance, even if you’re a summer person.

Wherever you are, whether you’re sweating through a heatwave or just looking for gentler ways to handle the warmth (with or without AC), here’s how to stay cool in hot weather with rituals inspired by ancient wisdom and natural wellness.

1. Don’t -Just- Drink Water

We recommend adding secondary beverages to your summer refreshments.

Drinking only water in large amounts, as many do out of habit while sweating or feeling the heat, can actually dilute your body’s electrolytes, including magnesium, sodium and potassium levels. If you don’t replenish these minerals, you may come down with symptoms such as fatigue, muscle cramps or dizziness, which are often more attributed to the sun itself than how we handle it.

Instead, continue to drink water but also add cooling herbal blends for body balance, such as peppermint tea (body coolant), hibiscus infusions (antioxidant-rich) and coconut water (electrolytes without sugars).

Our Cocoa Sun Ritual blend can also support you in summer, thanks to adaptogens like maca and cordyceps, which help your body respond more calmly to stress and heat.

2. Eat Hydrating Foods

Mother Nature can always provide everything we need to thrive. This includes cooling, hydrating produce like berries, cucumbers, mint, watermelon, zucchini and her many leafy greens.

Be sure to avoid fried, heavy or spicy foods as these create internal heat, even if the foods themselves aren’t hot.

3. Shift Your Rhythm

One of the best things we learned about staying cool on a hot day was to slow down. This doesn’t mean doing less, but shifting how and when we do things.

Everyone’s body and rhythm will be different, but at Noorish, we like to rise with the sun, rest when it’s at its highest, and hydrate throughout (not just when we’re hot).

Consider moving your most physically busy errands, including workouts and shopping runs, to mornings and evenings.

For a full reset of your internal thermostat, try even five minutes of breathwork in a cool space or outdoor shade.

4. Lower Your Home Temperatures (And Energy Bills)

For planet and wallet-friendly cooling at home, you can:

  • Switch from using a dryer to line-drying your clothes

  • Create no-cook meals (or move cooking outdoors)

  • Swap old bulbs for LED lights (less heat emission)

  • Plant more trees and greenery around yards and windows

5. Stay Cool Without AC

For some, staying really cool can be as simple as reaching for a thermostat. If you don’t have air conditioning or are trying to use it less, here are some eco-friendly ways to stay cool without AC:

  • Add peppermint essential oil to a damp washcloth for your neck or wrists.

  • Close curtains or blackout blinds during peak sun periods

  • Place a bowl of ice in front of your fan (evaporative cooling)

  • Soak your feet in Epsom salts and lavender

  • Sleep with a chilled bottle or cold bag near your feet

With just a few mindful shifts, you can feel cooler this summer while remaining present and more energetic in your favourite activities.

Happy days in the sunshine to you!
