As spring blooms in preparation for the orchestra of beauty that summer brings, many of us are already planning or tending to our gardens, prepping balcony pots or continuing to compost from our kitchens.
If you joined us for our April-published home detox rituals, which focused on low-impact diets, circular home systems and regenerative gardens, this edition is your guide on taking those ideas one step further.
These are practices to continue to support your well-being and the health of your personal ecosystem.
🌻 Wildflower Farming
You don’t need a big backyard, or a backyard at all, to nourish and support local biodiversity. Wildflower farming can be as simple as saving a corner of your patio or balcony for a planter box to fill with native flowers that are loved by pollinators.
Start by choosing regionally-native wildflowers, which in many Canadian regions include black-eyed Susans, bee balm, echinacea, yarrow, wild bergamot and milkweed. These wildflowers tend to be low-maintenance, water-wise and support bees, butterflies and birds.
While planting, wildflower seeds can be gently scattered over loosened soil or added into no-dig beds and balcony planters. If you already have compost and mulch in place from your regenerative garden efforts, you're halfway there.
Beyond the ecological benefits, watching a patch of wildflowers take root and bloom is a beautiful way to slow down, shift your focus outdoors and align your daily rhythm with Mother Nature’s.
🌾 Rewilding Your Space
Even if you live in a big city, you can adopt the mindset of rewilding, which is letting parts of your green space(s) grow more naturally with minimal human intervention. Not only does this offer support to native species and natural activity, but it also reduces your maintenance efforts.
Rewilding efforts can include letting sections of your yard go unmown for weeks or months at a time, hosting mixed herb borders or native shrubs instead of manicured hedges, plus replacing synthetic fertilizers with compost.
Any small shift counts and makes a large difference in creating natural habitats, feeding and protecting pollinators and supporting your local ecosystem.
🌏 Earth-Focused Rituals For The Family
As the school year winds down, this season is a great time to involve children in hands-on learning and rituals that reconnect them with the natural world.
Fun, planet-friendly ideas can include creating seed bombs (like bath bombs for nature) with clay and native wildflower seeds or starting a daily garden observation and care routine.
As your gardens bloom and grow, you could show your children how to wild harvest respectfully, press flowers or thoughtfully collect petals for art projects.
No matter what activities you choose, may they bring your family more peace, joy and reconnection to each other and the planet.
